muffy means: To break wind, fart, e.g. 'Who let Muffy off the chain?' exclaimed after an anonymous fart to discover the perpetrator. Sometimes abbreviated to 'Who muffed?'. Most likely that was due to a fading interest in random bodily functions, and increased interest in the opposite sex!

Often used at the start of exchanges that lead to a minor scuffle, later to be talked about as if it had been the rumble in the jungle. Steve says he was at secondary school 1977-81 in Scotland and used 'tube' in a less offensive way. He used it as the equivalent to something like 'daftie', or 'silly fool', and could be used as a familiar term or one of endearment. It may have had the same origins as the other definition but he certainly did not use it that way. He says would have had no problem reporting it to his mum or gran (although he wouldn't have said it to them, out of respect). It's still used the same way now by people of my age-group.

If you were 'under manners' this could also mean that you were in trouble, or being watched by a teacher in class, so had to be quiet. Obviously, it was used to tease and show that you could still continue to behave badly, whilst they were - indeed - 'under manners', I heard this all through secondary school. Incidentally, my school - Quintin Kynaston - was the school that Graham McPherson, 'Suggs' from Madness went to, and wrote the song 'Baggy Trousers' about! (ed: another bit of history recorded for posterity!)
bugs means: Mysterious disease or ailment transmitted to you by getting to close to someone who was dirty or smelly, and that you could in turn transmit to other people by touching them. e.g. if you got too close to someone who was dirty you then had 'the bugs'. People who were particularly dirty were called either 'bugsy boy' or 'bugsy girl'. Note. You could protect yourself from the bugs by clutching the top of your arm (I'd imagine this came from holding the area where you had your inoculation jab) and shouting, '1,2,3,4,5 bugs injection all over for life'. This was a primary school practise and died out by the time you got to secondary school.
