Hydrostatics means: The branch of science which relates to the pressure and equilibrium of nonelastic fluids, as water, mercury, etc.; the principles of statics applied to water and other liquids.
Hydrosulphate means: Same as Hydrosulphurent.
Hydrosulphide means: One of a series of compounds, derived from hydrogen sulphide by the replacement of half its hydrogen by a base or basic radical; as, potassium hydrosulphide, KSH. The hydrosulphides are analogous to the hydrates and include the mercaptans.
Hydrosulphite means: A saline compound of hydrosulphurous acid and a base.
Hydrosulphuret means: A hydrosulphide.
Hydrosulphureted means: Combined with hydrogen sulphide.
Hydrosulphuric means: Pertaining to, or derived from, hydrogen and sulphur; as, hydrosulphuric acid, a designation applied to the solution of hydrogen sulphide in water.
Hydrosulphurous means: Pertaining to, or designating, an acid obtained by the reduction of sulphurous acid. See Hyposulphurous acid, under Hyposulphurous.
Hydrotellurate means: A salt formed by the union of hydrotelluric acid and the base.
Hydrotelluric means: Formed by hydrogen and tellurium; as, hydrotelluric acid, or hydrogen telluride.
Zoantharia means: Same as Anthozoa.
Zoanthacea means: A suborder of Actinaria, including Zoanthus and allied genera, which are permanently attached by their bases.
Zizel means: The suslik.
Zizania means: A genus of grasses including Indian rice. See Indian rice, under Rice.
Zittern means: See Cittern.
Zither means: An instrument of music used in Austria and Germany. It has from thirty to forty wires strung across a shallow sounding-board, which lies horizontally on a table before the performer, who uses both hands in playing on it. [Not to be confounded with the old lute-shaped cittern, or cithern.]
Zirconoid means: A double eight-sided pyramid, a form common with tetragonal crystals; -- so called because this form often occurs in crystals of zircon.
Zircono means: See Zirco-.
Zirconium means: A rare element of the carbon-silicon group, intermediate between the metals and nonmetals, obtained from the mineral zircon as a dark sooty powder, or as a gray metallic crystalline substance. Symbol Zr. Atomic weight, 90.4.
Zirconic means: Pertaining to, containing, or resembling, zirconium; as, zirconic oxide; zirconic compounds.
