Electro-magnet means: A mass, usually of soft iron, but sometimes of some other magnetic metal, as nickel or cobalt, rendered temporarily magnetic by being placed within a coil of wire through which a current of electricity is passing. The metal is generally in the form of a bar, either straight, or bent into the shape of a horseshoe.
Electro-magnetic means: Of, Pertaining to, or produced by, magnetism which is developed by the passage of an electric current.
Electro-magnetism means: The magnetism developed by a current of electricity; the science which treats of the development of magnetism by means of voltaic electricity, and of the properties or actions of the currents evolved.
Hydromagnesite means: A hydrous carbonate of magnesia occurring in white, early, amorphous masses.
Magnes means: Magnet.
Magnesia means: A light earthy white substance, consisting of magnesium oxide, and obtained by heating magnesium hydrate or carbonate, or by burning magnesium. It has a slightly alkaline reaction, and is used in medicine as a mild antacid laxative. See Magnesium.
Magnesian means: Pertaining to, characterized by, or containing, magnesia or magnesium.
Magnesic means: Pertaining to, or containing, magnesium; as, magnesic oxide.
Magnesite means: Native magnesium carbonate occurring in white compact or granular masses, and also in rhombohedral crystals.
Magnesium means: A light silver-white metallic element, malleable and ductile, quite permanent in dry air but tarnishing in moist air. It burns, forming (the oxide) magnesia, with the production of a blinding light (the so-called magnesium light) which is used in signaling, in pyrotechny, or in photography where a strong actinic illuminant is required. Its compounds occur abundantly, as in dolomite, talc, meerschaum, etc. Symbol Mg. Atomic weight, 24.4. Specific gravity, 1.75.
Zymometer means: Alt. of Zymosimeter
Zymome means: A glutinous substance, insoluble in alcohol, resembling legumin; -- now called vegetable fibrin, vegetable albumin, or gluten casein.
Zymology means: A treatise on the fermentation of liquors, or the doctrine of fermentation.
Zymologist means: One who is skilled in zymology, or in the fermentation of liquors.
Zymological means: Of or pertaining to zymology.
Zymologic means: Alt. of Zymological
Zymogenic means: Capable of producing a definite zymogen or ferment.
Zymogenic means: Pertaining to, or formed by, a zymogene.
Zymogene means: One of a physiological group of globular bacteria which produces fermentations of diverse nature; -- distinguished from pathogene.
Zymogen means: A mother substance, or antecedent, of an enzyme or chemical ferment; -- applied to such substances as, not being themselves actual ferments, may by internal changes give rise to a ferment.
